The topic of our conference this year is the relationship between contemplation and peace. As history demonstrates, the question of peace is always topical. Rather than manifest harmonious diversity, the differences between people are a source of hostility and conflict. Many Christian mystics, philosophers and contemplatives thought that the reason for this was a false perception of reality through which we see the entire world, ourselves, and those who surround us in isolation from the eternal presence of God, from the unity of love and mutual connection within which God creates the world. The contemplative dimension of the Gospel has always proposed a simple way out of this situation to concentrate on that which is most important, on the Kingdom of God; to strive for peace not enmity; to leave the limits of self behind and in the silence of our own heart to listen to the Word made flesh. Our ecumenical community implements this call to a meditative perception of reality through the discipline of daily contemplative prayer, Christian meditation in the tradition taught by the Irish Benedictine monk John Main OSB. Today, as society all over the world, and in our part of the world in particular, suffers from division and violence, we want to initiate dialogue and joint silence dedicated to peace among the people.

We hope that this conference engenders words and silence that lead to a meeting not of nations, political parties and ideologies, but of the hearts of people who want to live their lives in the presence of God. This is why, during all Ukrainian MEDITATIO Seminars, we would like to look at the practice of Christian meditation in the context of the New Testament contemplative teaching of peace in Christ (Ephesians 2:14; Philippians 4:7) and the teachings of the founder of our ecumenical community, Father John Main OSB. We plan to bring together the friends of our community from different countries and will be glad to welcome guests who wish to visit to the beautiful Ukrainian cities of Kiev, Zhitomir and Lviv and to spend time with us in silent prayer for peace in Ukraine, all countries of the world, our hearts and our lives.
